Her Favourite Piece of Lingerie – A Guest Post by Valerie of Got Curves

Today on the blog I have a special guest… Val who actually works at a Canadian Lingerie Company Got Curves.

I thought it would be cool to include a story of a woman who is not plus size and a little bit of her journey to loving her body in lingerie and seeing that yes, she is sexy. I’ve learned over the last little while that not only plus size women struggle with body issues – most women do and I think it’s an important conversation to encourage women of all shapes and sizes to love their bodies. So let me introduce you to Val….

If you had asked me, even 5 years ago what my favourite piece of lingerie was I would have laughed, HARD! Me and lingerie? No way! I won’t look good in that stuff! I didn’t own more than two bras at a time; one in white, and one in black. Seriously, that’s it! In my mind, since I didn’t look like the models in the magazines, I was not worthy enough to wear beautiful, sexy lingerie. I think the one splurge I had was when I got married. I bought a pretty white corset that went under my dress with a lacy white panty to match. I wore them one time. The husband loved them! But I was not convinced. At the time, I was overly influenced by the unrealistic and simplistic images of beauty that we are bombarded with every single day, without even realizing it.

Fast forward to today, where I now work with GOT CURVES, an awesome online retailer which supplies stunning, sexy lingerie for curvy ladies! If my future-self had been able to tell my younger self, that I would be working in the lingerie industry one day, I would not have believed it! The BIGGEST change that has been slowly growing and gaining momentum in recent years is that women of all shapes, colors and sizes are now being celebrated. There is no longer one set beauty standard. FINALLY! I love it and I want to see more!

Now, not only do I LOVE lingerie, I’ve amassed quite the collection in a short period of time! And believe me, I have my eye on new pieces every day! I got to a point in my life where I had just had enough of other people’s expectations and ideals. I found my own voice, and things that I love and enjoy. I no longer care what other people think (as much). I wish I could have helped my younger self out a little!

So, on to my absolute favourite piece of lingerie! Which quite honestly, I believe all women should own at least one, maybe two! Or more!  THE CORSET is my ultimate, favourite piece of lingerie! I bought this gorgeous black corset for a special occasion and FELL IN LOVE! It pushes the “girls” up, and cinches in the waist and smoothes everything out. And ladies, it’s actually comfortable! I’m not kidding! It’s just plain awesome! I put it on, and instantly felt sexy and empowered. I walked around the house in it, with some cute panties and high heels! My husband enjoyed the show, and he still can’t quite wrap his head around my transformation. All I can think to myself is, well honey, it’s about time!

What I finally realized after years of self-consciousness and needless stress about myself is that we are ALL BEAUTIFUL! We just need to BELIEVE it! And it’s hard sometimes, when life can throw you for a loop or two.
The most important lesson I’ve finally learned is that once we feel truly beautiful on the inside, it shows on the outside. Love YOURSELF in all of your glorious imperfection and treat yourself with care. Rock your curves! 
